About us

A curious team who love complex subjects.

Cambridge TV is a small production company with a regular bench of freelance TV professionals, for when a job needs more hands. We're based at the Bradfield Centre on the Cambridge Science Park, surrounded by the kind of innovators we make films about.

Cambridge TV started out as Cambridge's own television channel on Freeview and cable from 2015 to 2017. We made an hour of news per day and sold hundreds of stories to the BBC. We made five magazine shows a week on topics from business to tech, law to music - including about fifty episodes of science stories in Elemental Ideas, giving a lot of Cambridge scientists their first experience of being filmed.

That's still our job, in a different form. We've worked across the University of Cambridge for over a decade, we're a trusted partner of Science Magazine and Carl shoots regularly for BBC Tech Now. All this keeps us deeply engaged on science, academic research and innovation.

Our job is to make audiences excited about complex ideas. A happy side effect is that we end up learning about a lot of fascinating subjects! That's what's in it for us.

Who you'll work with

Carl Homer

Carl Homer

Director

Carl has been in TV and film for over two decades, from broadcast documentaries to drama film sets. He's interviewed royalty, wrangled film crews and worked with everyone from Tom Cruise to the presenters of Blue Peter. What drives him now is helping brilliant people communicate their ideas clearly and beautifully. He brings curiosity, calm and a producer's ear for detail to every project.

Joe Donaghy

Joe Donaghy

Editor

Joe has cut trailers for Star Wars and Marvel, worked with Sir Ian McKellen, and led AV projects for Disney and Adidas. Now he helps researchers and organisations make big ideas beautifully watchable. He combines creativity with technical skill, and makes complex concepts flow, sound great and look effortless.

Bob Coates

Bob Coates

Director of Cambridge TV Training

Bob helped bring the BBC Micro into schools back in the '80s and went on to lead City & Guilds. At Cambridge TV Training, he's passing on that same mix of curiosity and rigour to the next generation of filmmakers. His job is to make sure production craft and storytelling skills remain high quality, whatever visual medium people go into for their careers.

02Worth knowing

Where else you'll have seen us.

Between us there are broadcast credits including Grand Designs, Portrait Artist of the Year, Sky Movies specials, various BBC documentaries (like Vicky McClure: Our Dementia Choir) and Children's BBC shows (like Blue Peter). We collaborate with TV-veteran scientists including Professor Giles Yeo and Chris van Tulleken.

Whether you're a seasoned pro in front of the camera, or a first-time interview subject, we've had lots of experience working with people like you and will make it easy, fun and drama-free!
